Intelligent home with inspired lighting system and dedicated home cinema wins top award

A fully-integrated luxury home in Cheshire has earned Yubu a top accolade in the Crestron Integration Awards 2011.  The home automation specialists won the Ultimate Connected Home (below €500K) category for their work on this beautiful property which, in the eyes of the client, “exceeded all of their expectations”.

Alderley Edge, located in an affluent part of Cheshire, is renowned for its high net worth properties.  The client had plans to extend and modernise Honeywood, his 5-bedroom family home, to include a dedicated home cinema and a state-of-the-art lighting system along with integrated control of all home entertainment, lighting, climate, motorised blinds and security.  Integral to the technical brief was the need to complement the interior design of the property and ease of use.

A Crestron AV2 control system provides the brains behind the home automation; every audio, video, and environmental element of the home has been integrated and is accessible through the one system.  Sleek, stylish touchscreens act as the user interface.  The wireless TS-6X devices move seamlessly from a wired docking station to fully wireless handheld operation.  In addition, Yubu has fitted TPMC-8L wall-mounted panels which feature 24-bit colour graphics and optional backlit pushbuttons. For audio distribution, Yubu selected the Crestron iServer, a rack-mountable audio server that uses the Apple iPod as its engine. The iServer, which syncs to iTunes over Ethernet, allows sharing of audio and video across eight different zones throughout the home.

The home entertainment system specified by Yubu, comprises a projector, concealed in the ceiling, and a 2.7m fixed frame screen with 2.35:1 aspect ratio.  Speakers are situated behind the screen, which is acoustic transparent, and are complemented other speakers at the rear and to the left and right of the room creating a 7.1 audio system. When the ‘movie’ option is selected on the touchscreen, the projector descends and, one minute later, the lights are gradually dimmed.  Media sources include Sky HD, Blu Ray, PS3 and Apple TV.  To enhance the cinema experience, six motorised Signature ‘home cinema’ seats have been installed.

From the client’s perspective, one of the most important elements of the project is the lighting.  Working closely with the architect and interior designer, Yubu created a contemporary system which draws attention to some of the stunning features of the house.  For example, LED lights are set in the ceiling and floor and directional down-lighters make a focal point of picture frames and statues.

The lighting control system features a DIN-AP2 control engine which is extensively programmable using Crestron’s suite of powerful development software and vast database of drivers and software modules. There are twenty one stylish black C2NI-CB wall mounted keypads with brushed stainless steel faceplates; featuring customisable backlit buttons. The system also incorporates ten Crestron 4-channel dimmer modules and six 8-channel lighting control modules.

Yubu has excelled in producing a creative lighting system which features, for example, colour change lights in the swimming pool to exploit the dark pearlescent wall tiles.  A ‘dusk till dawn’ setting brings on the external lighting to show the outside of the home to its best advantage.

The lighting keypads also control the motorised blinds in the garden room area, library and kitchen. The garden room area blinds are designed to see out but deflect the sun to protect any furnishings.

The lighting control system has been designed to integrate with the alarm so that the lights go into vacation mode once set and normal mode when unset and if the alarm is triggered certain lights around the home will come on.

One of the challenges faced by Yubu was integrating the technology to fit comfortably with the clean, modern décor of the property.  The installer worked with a bespoke furniture maker to design hand-made bespoke cabinetry.  In the bedroom, for example is a purpose built cabinet which conceals a 55” TV.

Overall, Yubu has succeeded in creating an intelligent home which provides the client with simple touch control of the key AV and environmental features of his house.  Within this they have incorporated a dedicated home cinema to allow the owners to enjoy their hobby of watching films in a comfortable, cinema-like environment.  Finally, the client is delighted with the lighting system which they consider to be ‘beyond what they imagined’ giving a real ‘wow’ factor to their newly finished home.
